Fun Christmas Stocking Facts
A legend with golden roots. A popular tale credits St. Nicholas with tossing bags of gold down a chimney to help a poor family; the coins supposedly landed in stockings drying by the fire, hence the tradition of filling stockings with small gifts.
Oranges = gold. The classic orange in the toe of a stocking symbolizes those legendary gold coins. Over time, nuts, sweets, and small toys joined fruit as typical stocking fillers.
Shoes vs. stockings. In parts of Europe, children traditionally left shoes (or wooden clogs) by the hearth for St. Nicholas to fill.
From simple socks to showpieces. Early stockings were actual socks. Later, families used oversized, decorated stockings (felt, knit, embroidered) and added name labels, a tradition many keep today with personalized stockings.
Global variety. In some regions, people place stockings on beds instead of mantels; others fill them on St. Nicholas Day (Dec 6) or Epiphany (Jan 6) rather than Christmas morning.
