Fun Christmas Ornament Facts

Glass baubles began in Germany.

Many historians trace modern glass ornaments to Lauscha, Germany in the 1800s, where glassblowers produced hand-blown spheres and finials that spread across Europe and beyond.

Woolworth helped popularize ornaments in the U.S.

In the late 19th century, retailer F. W. Woolworth began importing German glass ornaments, helping them become a holiday staple in America.

"Shiny Brite" ornaments were a WWII-era icon.

When wartime cut off German imports, U.S. makers ramped up mass production. Shiny Brite ornaments (by Max Eckardt, often using Corning glass) became the classic American look of the 1940s–50s.

Early "kugel" ornaments were heavy and luxurious.

Mid-19th-century kugel were thick, silvered glass balls (and grape/fruit shapes) prized for their reflective sheen. They were quite different from today's light, thin ornaments.

Museums now collect ornaments as design history.

Institutions hold examples ranging from Victorian glass to modern designs, showing changes in materials, craftsmanship, and style.
